Greetings and Salutations, People: It’s the radio show where the host can cause a controversy by saying he DOESN’T love Fidel Castro. This is Vertically Striped Radio and I am your host and alleged Communist sympathizer Craig Dodge.

Reds were changed to Redlegs during the 1950’s due to fear of Communism. They kept the Redlegs name from 1953.

If you’re wondering where the term “Redlegs” came from, this was once a derogatory term used to refer to a specific group of poor white people living on various islands in the Caribbean (generally originally from Ireland and Scotland).  They were also commonly known as “white slaves”.  Some were in fact actual white slaves, having been taken by press gangs and transported to Barbados to be sold.  Others were simply indentured servants, agreeing to work more or less as slaves for a time in exchange for transportation.  It’s estimated around 50,000 of these Redlegs were transported from Ireland alone during the mid-17th century.

So, apparently, the Reds preferred to associate themselves with slavery, rather than communism.

JOSHUA TREE, Calif. (AP) -- Police say a naked burglar has been arrested while taking a shower after he sipped champagne and ate a meal in a Southern California family's home.
San Bernardino County Police arrested 25-year-old Michael Calvert at gunpoint on Thursday while he lathered up in the shower of the home he had broken into earlier that night.
After helping himself to a bottle of champagne and a meal, Calvert decided to take a shower in the Joshua Tree home.
The homeowners called 911 after returning home at 8:10 p.m. and hearing someone in the shower.
Calvert was booked for investigation of residential burglary.

MODESTO, Calif. (AP) -- A California weightlifter says he accidentally shot himself in one of the weirdest ways you’ve ever heard.
He told Modesto police officers he was lifting dumbbells in his home Wednesday night when he dropped one on a stray .22 caliber bullet that was randomly lying on the floor of his basement. The pressure caused by the dumbbell dropping on the bullet caused the bulled to fire wounding the man in the shoulder.
The man's name hasn't been released.
Modesto police investigators say the man's story is suspicious, but not impossible.
Police say that it is possible that the impact on the rim of the bullet could have caused it to fire. Making the story seem more plausible, officers searched the property and found a shell casing, but not a gun and none of the neighbors saw anyone leaving the man's home.

PARIS, France (AP) -- Paris police say they've seized some rather unusual contraband: around 13 tons of mini Eiffel Towers. (26,000 pounds of mini Eiffel Towers)
French Police have arrested a Paris souvenir shop owner, her husband and her son massive trinket-seizure Friday.
The three are accused of selling the mini towers at tourist spots including the Louvre and the actual Eiffel Tower without a permit.
The police operation followed several months of surveillance of the souvenir shop.

Let’s get to the news… (Play News Music – Clip 03)

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (AP) – Small tip for criminals, If you’re going to give the cops a fake last name, be sure that your real last name isn’t tattooed on your arm. A 19-year-old Idaho man with his last name tattooed on his forearm was arrested after he tried unsuccessfully tried to give police a fake name, but was foiled by his tats.

19-year-old Dylan Edward Contreras was arrested early Saturday on outstanding warrants because his tattoos gave him away. The arresting officer reports that he told three men who were walking on the street with a dog to move to the sidewalk. One of them men appeared like he was getting ready to run away, so the officer asked for identification.

Contreras identified himself as Emiliano Velesco, but gave the cop his actual birth date. A police database search found no matches for a Velesco. However, the officer had a dispatcher run a check with the birthday he was given and the last name tattooed on Contreras’s forearm.

Bam! Contreras was arrested as the search quickly revealed that Contreras had three warrants for “failure to appear” charges and now he has added a new charge of providing false information to police.

CANBERRA, Australia – Australian Pilot Braden Blennerhassett saw a snake's head pop out from under the dashboard of his twin-engine plane shortly after takeoff from Darwin airport on Tuesday.

Blennerhassett’s heart raced as he tried to keep his hands still while maneuvering the plane back to the northern city of Darwin. The snake popped its head out from behind the instrument panel several times, and then the ordeal worsened when the animal crawled across his leg during the approach to the airport.

He was told to return to Darwin and a snake handler was organised to meet Mr Blennerhassett, but the reptile was never found.

The snake is suspected to have been a golden tree snake, a non-venomous species that can grow up to 5 feet in length.

Vertically Striped Radio has been able to obtain exclusive audio taken from the flight during the harrowing return to the airport. (Clip 20) We want to caution you, however, as the language used in this clip may be too strong for immature audiences.

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- An information technology worker in Iowa has surrendered to police on a very unusual charge.

59-year-old Raymond Foley turned himself in Saturday to face a charge of second-degree criminal mischief. His crime? Urinating on the chairs of his co-workers.

Police say co-workers had complained about unusual stains appearing on their chairs. A security system was installed, and police say it caught Foley in the act.

Police documents say Foley looked up employee photos in the agency database and then would go into the office during off hours and relieve himself on their chairs.

Foley declined to comment to The Associated Press on Tuesday, other than to acknowledge that he, in fact, no longer works at the Farm Bureau office in West Des Moines.

The chair damage was estimated at $4,500.

The Champion Dog – A 26 Dollar Hot Dog at Arlington Stadium

Team president Nolan Ryan did not mince words with ESPN Radio in Dallas regarding the Texas Rangers' most recent acquisition — a two-foot-long, one-pound gourmet hot dog that feeds three or four fans and costs $26:
"It has to be a tremendous wiener. And then we're getting some kind of exotic bread flown in from France. And I don't know what kind of condiments you put on that. But I do want to look at it.
"That's a wild dog."
Holy StrasBurgers! Everything really is bigger in Texas. A result of the work of Rangers Ballpark chef Cristobal Vasquez, the dog is a Coney Island-style wiener that will be topped with shredded cheese, chili and sauteed onions. Not to mention the bun, apparently made of "exotic bread flown in from France" — which might be the most Nolan Ryan thing that Nolan Ryan has ever said.

DENVER, Colorado – A 56-year-old man was killed on Thursday when he was buried under a 20-foot mound of pinto beans at a warehouse in eastern Colorado where he worked, police said.
Raymond Segura Jr. was pronounced dead at the Brush, Colo., facility of the Kelley Bean Company after efforts to reach him alive were unsuccessful.
Martin said emergency personnel were summoned to the site at 11:30 a.m. on reports of a worker trapped in a pile of loose pinto beans.
Martin said dozens of rescue workers and even four inmates from the county jail spent an hour digging through a 20-foot high mound of the legumes weighing several tons in order to get to the trapped worker, but he was dead when crews reached him.
Segura was a longtime resident of the area and had worked at the warehouse for over 12 years.
Police say that the cause of the accident, how the victim became trapped and the exact cause of death are under investigation.

ROGERS, Arkansas (AP) -- A northwest Arkansas teenager thought it would be funny to text a random phone number saying she hid a body, but the joke backfired.

Of all the local phone numbers she could have chosen, the 15-year-old Rogers girl picked one that belonged to a police detective. Police found the girl's address by tracing her cellphone number.

The prank? To text: "I hid the body ... Now what?" to a random phone number. The teen said she got the idea for the prank from a posting on the website Pinterest.

Police didn't find the prank funny and say it tied up some of the department's resources.

The girl was released with a warning.

TACOMA, Washington (AP) -- A Washington state corrections officer has been charged with bigamy after Facebook discovered two women were connected to him and suggested they might want to be "friends."

Pierce County prosecutors say Alan L. O'Neill married a woman in 2001, moved out in 2009, changed his name and remarried without divorcing wife No. 1.

Wife No. 1 recently found out about Wife No. 2 when Facebook detected their connection to O'Neill and suggested the friendship connection.

Wife No. 1 then called the Alan’s mother, and an hour later the Alan arrived at Wife No. 1's apartment, and she asked him several times if they were divorced. "The defendant said, `No, we are still married.'"

Apparently neither O'Neill nor his first wife had filed for divorce, but she thought that they were divorced somehow. His name change came a month before he married his second wife. O'Neill allegedly told Wife No. 1 not to tell anybody about his dual marriages, that he would fix it. Wife No. 1 alerted authorities.

O'Neill, 41, was previously known at Alan Fulk. He has worked as a Pierce County corrections officer for five years. He was placed on administrative leave after prosecutors charged him Thursday. He could face up to a year in jail if convicted.

Greetings and Salutations, People: It’s the World’s Most Dangerous Podcast, THIS is Vertically Striped Radio. I am your host, and perhaps the worst Scramble With Friends player on the planet, Craig Dodge. From a sunny day in Denver, Colorado, let’s do this thing!

I watched the second half of the Oscars on Sunday night, and apart from The Artist winning Best Picture as I assured you it would last week, this year’s Oscars (at least the parts I saw) were pretty lame. The ratings back that up as well, as for the first time ever, the Grammy’s did a bigger number than the Oscars. Probably the biggest issue was how much The Artist won. It took home Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director, Best Original Score and Best Costume Design. If you want to alienate an American audience, give award after award to a bunch of French guys…works every time.

The take away from this year’s Oscars…
Angelina Jolie – I’m out.
I stood by her through her wearing a vial of Billy Bob Thornton’s blood around her neck, I stood by her while she tried to adopt half of Africa in what felt more like an attempt to be fashionable than an attempt to help kids, and I would have even stood by her with her ridiculous leg pose on Sunday night, but I have to say, I’m out on her because she looks like she is starving herself. I don’t care for the Skeletor look, and she looks so thin I half expect Sally Struthers to be crying in a commercial with maudlin music in the background while she asks, “Won’t someone think Angelina Jolie?” I need SOME meat on my women, and Angelina Jolie now looks like she is on a hunger strike that she won’t end until the Washington Generals defeat the Globetrotters. I’m sorry, Angelina, but I can only take so much. I have to end it between us.

Let’s get to the news… (Play News Music – Clip 03)

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina - A 43-year-old man in North Carolina died Tuesday after drinking gasoline and lighting a cigarette.

Gary Allen Banning of Havelock, N.C., was taken to a local hospital late Monday after police responded to a 911 call from a resident reporting an apartment fire. Banning was transported to the University of North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill where he died early Tuesday. He had suffered severe burns.

According to police, Banning accidentally drank from a salsa jar containing gasoline at a friend's apartment, spitting it out and getting it on his clothes. He then lit a cigarette a few minutes later that ignited his clothes and caused the fatal burns.

"It was just a freak incident," said W.K. Preslar, an investigator with the Havelock Police Department.

Preslar said Banning's friend was a mechanic and used gasoline to remove grease from his hands.

METHUEN, Mass. (AP) -- School officials in a Massachusetts town are apologizing for sending home a lunch menu that listed KKK Chicken Tenders as an option.

About 6,500 students in four Methuen schools went home with new menus Tuesday, a day after the original one mistakenly listed chicken seemingly in the style of the Ku Klux Klan.

Superintendent Judith Scannell said the menu was supposed to list KK Chicken Tenders, with the KK standing for a creatively spelled "Krispy, Krunchy," but an employee mistakenly hit the "K" key one too many times.

Scannell apologized if anyone was offended. The food service director got one complaint.

A student pointed out to WCVB-TV that it there would've been no issue if officials just spelled the words correctly, with the letter C.

RECIFE, Brazil - Ricardo Sergio Freire de Barros, age 41, was picked up by police in the northeastern Brazilian city of Recife and charged with using false documents and forgery.
He also was carrying several fraudulent forms of identification, but what makes this story interesting is he went into a bank and tried to open a bank account with a fake ID that had the name “Joao Pedro dos Santos" with a photo of Jack Nicholson's face on it.
Police said Freire de Barros was already being investigated for fraudulent activity when he was arrested.

CLINTON, Miss. (AP) -- Police in Mississippi say charges are pending against a Jackson area teen for pulling a prank on a friend when he advertised a free baby on Craigslist using the friend's cell phone number on the contact information.

Police Chief Don Byington would not identify the youths involved, but said the posting was "a bad practical joke."

Byington says the 18-year-old student at Clinton High took a photo of an unknown baby boy and placed the ad on Craigslist to give away - not sell - the baby. He says police interviewed the student Monday.

Prosecutors say the posting of such information can be prosecuted under state law that makes the "posting of messages through electronic media for the purpose of causing injury to another person" a felony.

DEER PARK, Texas (AP) -- A sting operation by a suburban Houston police department netted one of their own when surveillance cameras caught an officer repeatedly stealing colleagues' food and drinks from the refrigerator in the station's break room.

Deer Park police Officer Kevin Yang was charged with misdemeanor theft and suspended for 30 days without pay. Deer Park Police Chief Greg Griggs said that a class C misdemeanor conviction would not keep Yang from returning to duty.

Griggs says he authorized the video sting because the thefts have been going on for too long. Even though the items being stolen may be of trivial value, Griggs says theft is theft.

Yang tells KTRK that he was merely taking it upon himself to keep the shared refrigerator clean.

OAK PARK, Illinois – A family living in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park was shocked to discover their monthly electric bill was more expensive than most families make in an entire year: $107,625.16.

Kathy and David Rater had used 2,236 kilowatt hours the previous month and received a bill for for $276. But the following month, their bill said the couple had used closer to 1,647,499 kilowatts. There's no way the Rater's could use that much energy in one month even if they tried "The taxes (and fees alone) on the bill were $16,000,"

And to add to the anxiety, the Rater's home is signed up for automatic bill payments.  "I have automatic withdrawal, and I have overdraft protection," Rajter tells the Sun-Times. "Imagine if I'd just set the bill aside — it would have wiped out my entire checking and savings."

While neither company is exactly sure how the strange meter error took place, ComEd assured the Rater's that the six-figure total would not be deducted from their account. In fact, ComEd has reset their bill to zero while they investigate the issue.
